Fast Day 5: Ezer

Genesis 2:18, Matthew 11:28-30

“The Lord God said “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” (ESV)

Womanhood, what a wonderful blessing. Throughout the Bible we can witness several accounts of the blessing of womanhood when properly aligned with God’s vision, like Rebekah demonstrating extraordinary kindness and generosity while watering Abraham’s servant’s camel. In our current Western world, a brief Google search reveals the world’s modern expression of womanhood as multifaceted; focusing on leadership, self-advocacy, personal growth through spiritual, physical and community connection, and a heavy focus on equality. While potentially beautiful, when separate from God’s purpose, the eventual outcome of these pursuits may be a bit segregating and self serving–  distracting us from the fullness of what the Lord has to offer us.

Over time, I believe that many of us have misapplied God’s intention for womanhood. What he’s created is actually quite harmonious. Womanhood in the Bible roots back to the word “helper”.  The Hebrew translation of this word is “Ezer”.  The word Ezer speaks about a person who is a strong rescuer, a strength, a counterbalance. Interestingly enough, this same word was used to describe God, Himself, sixteen times throughout the Old Testament. This gives us a beautiful idea that ezer was created to actually come alongside humanity in our helplessness.

Why is this something to look at? I think oftentimes our natural inclination to be an ezer to those around us drives us to get caught up in our daily roles, running the race, burning the candle at both ends– potentially taking on more than what was actually asked of us. This leads to burnout and a burden beyond the Lord’s intention. God’s original perfect design was for us to co-labor, steward the land, and multiply.  Of course, as man fell, and sin entered the world, His perfect design was lost. We began to lean on our own understanding, making it more and more difficult to discern how God wants us to fulfil our “ezer” nature.

Whether man or woman, I believe that God is calling us to a season of slowing down and seeking Him first. Matthew 11: 28-30 says “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (ESV) When we slow down, and seek the Perfect Ezer, He helps us see that we were created to work together– to be each other's aide. Our load becomes lighter, rest and restoration comes to our weary souls, and the fruit becomes greater.

Lord, as we step into this new year, help us to seek your face first. Lord, continue to remind us that you are the ultimate helper. Thank you for always being our rescuer. As we sit in your presence, I ask that the Spirit would flow through our women, men and families here at COtR. This year let us seek your will together and operate as beautiful counterparts in raising up the next generation and leading people into relationship with you.

Questions:

  1. How does your understanding of the word womanhood impact your everyday actions?

  2. What have you picked up that the Lord has not asked you to?

  3. Seek the Lord: What does He have for you in this season?
